Venus: goddess of art and romance, pleasure and beauty. With Venus in fiery Sagittarius, life glows like a joyful solstice evening. This is an exuberant, festive cycle. Sagittarius takes us out of our own little bubbles. The centaur is spirited; vibrant; spontaneous; carefree. And if you feel any trademark Sagittarian restlessness, group adventure is the cure. This is an especially favorable time for natal Sagittarians, as well as Aries and Leo. The rest of us absorb your luminescence with gratitude!
Consider Sagittarius as Capricorn’s forerunner. It is Sagittarius who prepares us for the sea goat’s architectural world. Before we enter this earthen kingdom, we need to gather our light. It is time for an infusion of felicity. Reach higher, reach farther, draw back your arrow, and then find the limit, the boundary. This the key to Capricorn’s domain: common sense; self-control; self-discipline. Striking balance between work and adventure. Food for thought before the upcoming Winter Solstice.
When planets transit Sagittarius, a childlike naïveté swirls. Sagittarius has been known to gallop away when a situation calls for an assertive response. He is not just physically restless, but also emotionally. He does not want to confront a person or a thing if it will cause discord. He wants to dance along to the beat of his sparkling idealism in rose-colored glasses. So we must resist the urge to flee when social obstacles arise. Don’t take half-baked shortcuts, because they never really end up being shorter. From Rumi’s poem Tattooing in Qazwin: “Brother, stand the pain. / Escape the poison of your impulses. / The sky will bow to your beauty, if you do. / Learn to light the candle.”
If only Sagittarius could slow down long enough to take a good look. If only he could still his mind and body, take a rest, let it all sink in, breathe deeply. This is the centaur’s greatest task. Venus in Sagittarius will examine what we’re learning – on a spiritual or philosophical level in our relationships – and whether or not these lessons are landing. If we don’t take the time to reflect, we don’t absorb the lessons. There are some amazing Sagittarius mentors out there who have mastered this foreign art of stillness. Watch for the arrival of these special Sagittarians.
Mercury Retrograde starts the day before on Halloween, so honestly most of this cycle will be pretty whacky. First challenging day comes on Nov 14 (two days after the full moon) when Venus squares Neptune Retrograde in Pisces. Sometimes this aspect involves waiting around, or confusion with a friend or partner. You might distract yourself by taking a walk near a body of water – better to keep moving than linger indoors, wondering wtf is going on.
Mercury Retrograde ends on Nov 20, two days before Sag season begins. Finally, on Nov 24 (the last day of Venus in Sag), Venus links up with Jupiter in Sagittarius for a powerful conjunction – Venus will be the last planet (other than the moon) to be conjunct Jupiter at home in Sagittarius before Jupiter moves on to Capricorn on Dec 2! This conjunction will bring out the fiery side of Sagittarius – there may be explosive arguments on philosophical subjects, for example. A day of great travel and/or movement of people.
Usually I would say you could travel before this day too, as Sagittarius is such a wandering beast, but I don’t recommend it considering Mercury Retrograde. We can still expand inwardly by learning cool new things. Pick up a new book! Dance around your house!
If you’re feeling overwhelmed by interpersonal dynamics, focus on the sacral chakra in meditation. If you’re struggling with anger or self-control, meditate on the solar plexus chakra. Stay sparkly with Sagittarius Yoga. If you were born with Venus in Sagittarius, this is your Venus Return.
