On January 18th, 2022 the North Node enters Taurus and the South Node enters Scorpio.
The Nodes of the Moon will stay in Taurus and Scorpio until July 12th, 2023.
This is one of the most important transits of the year and will completely transform our approach to resources, values, relationships, and intimacy.
“The best things in life are free. The second best are very expensive” – Coco Chanel
The best things are free – love, friendship, sunshine, nature. We should all be grateful for what we have, for what is abundantly everywhere, right?
It’s not that simple.
While the best things in life are indeed free, they require hard work and conscious awareness to be appreciated.
The way society works, with all its intricacies, makes it difficult to focus on the NOW and forget about what can go wrong.
Taurus’ role is to remind us of what’s good for us, of what gives us pleasure.
Scorpio’s role is to remind us of what can go wrong if we lose our focus and awareness.
Knowing what can go wrong (relationships and friendships can end, too much sunshine can give us cancer, nature can be merciless if we go into the wild unprepared) can not only help us appreciate what’s good, but it also helps us preserve our physical, emotional and psychological integrity so that we have enough life to live to appreciate the good Taurus stuff.
Knowing what we want, our own definition of “the best things in life” is crucial. Once we get what we think we want, we either want more of it, or we want something else.
But that’s perhaps because what we wanted in the first place was not what we truly wanted. Maybe we settled for less, or abandoned the search too early.
The best things in life are the byproduct of something that’s authentically good and has a personal meaning to us – therefore cannot be bought on the market.
Trying to get the next best thing is a sign that the Taurus search is not over yet – that we still haven’t found what we were looking for.
Of course, finding what’s truly valuable is not “the end” – it is the beginning of a Scorpnionic journey of continuous transformation.
Taurus Vs. Scorpio
When Taurus and Scorpio are in balance, we appreciate what we have because we understand how delicate, unpredictable and fragile life is. We don’t take anything for granted, yet we relax and surrender to life’s intrinsic beauty and grace.
When Taurus and Scorpio are out of balance, we either don’t appreciate what we have (Taurus) because we are afraid of what can go wrong (Scorpio), or we don’t relax into surrender (Scorpio) because we are afraid of losing what’s ours (Taurus).
Art by John Novak
Healthy Taurus energy enjoys life and appreciates whatever comes its way, feeling worthy of receiving it.
Unhealthy Taurus energy lacks self-worth and cannot enjoy the simple pleasures of life, looking for substitutes instead – food, pleasure, money, possessions, luxury, branded items – or “the second-best things in life” that are very expensive.
Healthy Scorpio energy knows when it needs to apply healthy precautions, and when it needs to open and share with others.
Unhealthy Scorpio energy is anxious, controlling, and daunted by guilt. Unhealthy Scorpio energy doesn’t believe that the best things in life are actually free, and will unconsciously try to work hard to get them.
Scorpio is notorious for using the Taurus free stuff – love, sex, pleasure, money as a weapon to gain control, believing that control will help ease the feelings of guilt and anxiety.
The North Node in Taurus and the South Node in Scorpio will seek to strike a balance between two opposite approaches.
How we compensate, what we aspire to have, to control, the way we conduct our intimate relationships will become major themes for every single one of us in the next 18 months.
The North Node And The South Node
The Lunar Nodes are the only astrological bodies that move backward. Because of their backward movement, the Lunar Nodes are associated with our past lives, with karma and destiny.
The South Node – also called the descending node – is connected to past lives and past karma. The North Node – or the ascending Node – is connected to our future karma and with the opportunity to change our karma and re-write the script of our destiny.
The South Node represents our unresolved karma, that we need to ‘sort out’ in this lifetime. The South Node shows us what our unfinished task is – where we need to “finish what you have started” and fulfill the mission of the South Node.
The South Node is the “familiar” comfort zone, what we instinctively “know” from previous lifetimes (or through genetic memory), what feels safe and natural – our comfort zone. But there is a reason why your South Node mission hasn’t been fulfilled.
“We cannot solve our problems with the same thinking we used when we created them”. We need to approach them from the opposite direction. We won’t be able to complete your karmic lesson unless we look in the exact opposite direction, the direction of the North Node.
The North Node is what we need to embrace and learn how to master. We can only heal and unlock your South Node past karma when we embrace our North Node.
Does that mean we should dismiss the South Node and completely focus on the North Node? Not at all.
Your South Node is a gift – something that is waiting to be birthed and brought to completion. But to do that, to get to your South Node, we need new directions, with the North Node as our compass.
North Node In Taurus And South Node In Scorpio
In the last 18 months, the North Node was in the Gemini and the South Node was in Sagittarius. What used to be important to us in the past 18 months when the Nodes have been in Gemini and Sagittarius will now take a back seat, as new themes are requiring our focus.
The Gemini/Sagittarius axis is the axis of information, travel, movement and law. Needless to say that these themes have been at the center of our collective attention in the last year and a half.
Taurus/Scorpio is the axis of resources, of what we value.
Taurus and Scorpio are fixed signs – with Taurus and Scorpio things get personal.
This Lunar Nodes ingress will ask us to find what truly matters to us and as always with the Nodes, we have two ways to approach the “how to”: take the safe route, or venture into the unknown.
Each pair of signs are connected. In anatomy, Taurus rules the mouth, and Scorpio the excretory organs. Taurus is how we indulge with our senses, by giving and receiving pleasure, whereas Scorpio is where we come into complete union with the other.
Of course, sex has consequences: in that space where the yin and the yang collide, new life emerges. But the condition for new life to emerge is total surrender, when we give away a little bit of our life force, to create something new.
Taurus is ingestion, Scorpio is control and release. Taurus is how we feed ourselves, how we get our nutrients, what we put inside our bodies so that we can grow and thrive.
Although a fixed sign, Taurus can be a very curious and experimental energy. Taurus’ role as the mouth, as the gateway to the body, is to find the best foods that deliver the best nutrition, the best value.
And this approach goes beyond food. We all have a bachelor Taurus friend who goes from one partner to another (George Clooney is a good example) until they find THE ONE and then everything changes.
Once Taurus finds what’s good for them, they stick to it. But before that, Taurus’ role is to search and discover.
If Taurus is the intake, what we put into our bodies – its polarity is the exit, what comes out. Scorpio is control and release – the inner knowing of when to hold on to something, and when to surrender.
Birth is a good example. The fetus needs to spend enough time in the uterus to grow and develop, and Scorpio’s role is to control the birthing process so that it doesn’t happen too soon.
On the other hand, when the baby is ready to come out, Scorpio’s role is to release what it initially used to control.
The Taurus/Scorpio process of intake/outturn is very much mimicked by the 2 Lunar Nodes. The North Node, or the Head of the Dragon with its hungry, insatiable qualities very much resembles Taurus.
The South Node, or the Tail of the Dragon, with its release, karmic function reminds us of Scorpio. In Indian astrology, it is in fact believed that the North Node is ruled by Taurus, and the South Node by Scorpio – hence the symbolic resemblance.
North Node In Taurus And South Node In Scorpio Themes
There are some themes where the North Node in Taurus and the South Node in Scorpio will seek a balancing act:
What’s mine (Taurus) vs what’s ours (Scorpio) – The North Node in Taurus will invite us to focus on what’s ours – our own material, emotional, mental and spiritual resources.
Sometimes – especially in relationships, we give up our wants and needs and prioritize the relationship. We take a leap of trust and pull resources together with others without knowing if they will take good care of what we worked hard to acquire.
Or we take what’s “ours” for granted, by neglecting not only our own needs, but also our partner’s needs. When there is an imbalance between what’s mine and what’s ours, resentment and contempt can arise.
With the North Node in Taurus, “Put your oxygen mask on first before helping others” is a great line to follow. Only from a position on “enoughness” can we then build something beautiful with others.
Self-worth (Taurus) vs. intimacy (Scorpio) – The North Node in Taurus will ask us to develop our self-worth. If your relationships have been unbalanced or dominated by power struggles, this is the time to cut off putrid ties and develop a healthy sense of self-worth.
When you put yourself first and know your worth, you will automatically attract relationships that are good for you and find a genuine sense of intimacy.
Autonomy (Taurus) vs. Surrender (Scorpio) – The North Node in Taurus will push us to become self-autonomous even if it feels scary. If you’ve been depending on other people – emotionally, financially or in other ways, this is a time to become more self-reliant.
Another version of this scenario is attempting to control other people’s resources (emotional, financial, etc). Surrendering to others from a place of love is what Scorpio truly wants, but we’ll only be able to do that if we feel safe and secure (Taurus).
Eros (Taurus) vs Thanatos (Scorpio) – The North Node in Taurus is ruled by Venus, the planet of love. The South Node in Scorpio is ruled by Mars and Scorpio, the planets of war and death.
According to Sigmund Freud, we humans are ruled by two opposing biological instincts: the life instinct (Eros) and the death instinct (Thanatos). Eros directs our self-sustaining activities like breathing, eating and reproduction.
In contrast, Thanatos seeks the destruction or the transformation of the physical body, so it can transcendent its material limitations.
These 2 instincts are equally strong and explain the 2 constants in the universe “life” and “death”. If life was stronger than death, we would never die. If death was stronger than life, we would never survive. The magic is found in the tension between the two.
North Node Conjunct Uranus In Taurus
The North Node in Taurus makes a rare aspect in 2022: it conjuncts Uranus in Taurus. The aspect is in orb from May until September, and it becomes exact on July 26th, 2022 at 18° Taurus.
When the North Node is conjunct Uranus, we will be awakened – sometimes suddenly, otherwise with interesting serendipities and twists – to what it is that we were truly born to do in this lifetime.
If you’ve been living in a well-constructed illusion, or just live a life other people or society has crafted for you, then the awakening can be quite shocking – something like Neo in the Matrix.
On the other hand, if you’ve always known what your path is, what your purpose is but you never really got the chance to get closer to your goal, 2022 will make it easier than ever. North Node and Uranus come with a green light from the Universe – yes, you can now follow your path with no more hindrances!
How North Node in Taurus and South Node in Scorpio will influence you
We learn best from experience. To find out how the North Node in Taurus and the South Node in Scorpio will influence you, reflect on what happened in your life when you had this transit in the past.
This is when the North Node was in Taurus and the South Node in Scorpio:
April 2003 – December 2004
September 1984 – April 1986
February 1966 – August 1967
August 1947 – January 1949
If you’re at least 18 years old, you have experienced this transit at least once. What was going on in your life back then? You can expect similar themes to resurface from January 2022 until July 2023.
These Taurus-Scorpio connected themes will emerge especially when we have the Solar and Lunar Eclipses. As you may know, it’s the Lunar Nodes that bring us the eclipses.
We will have the following eclipses while the Lunar Nodes are in Taurus and Scorpio:
November 19th, 2021 – North Node Lunar Eclipse at 27° Taurus
April 30th, 2022 – North Node Solar Eclipse at 10° Taurus
May 15th, 2022 – South Node Lunar Eclipse at 25° Scorpio
October 25th, 2022 – South Node Lunar Eclipse at 2° Scorpio
May 5th, 2023 – South Node Lunar Eclipse at 14° Scorpio
October 28th, 2023 – North Node Lunar Eclipse at 5° Taurus
You also want to pay attention to what happens in your life around the time of the eclipses, because these events will have an important role in your life going forward.
If your birthday is around one of these dates or if you have personal planets (Sun, Moon, Mercury, Venus, Mars) or angles (Ascendant, Descendant, MC, IC) around the degrees of the eclipse, you will be especially influenced by the North Node in Taurus and the South Node in Scorpio in 2022-2023.
Also, if you are (approx.) 18, 37, 55, or 74 years old you will have your Nodal Return, which is a time when you effortlessly move in the direction of your destiny. Fated events, and fated relationships await you. Things fall into place.
If you are (approx) 27, 46, 64 or 83 years old, you will have your Reverse Nodal Return, which is a time of adjustment, integration of what you’ve learned, and karmic recalibration.
No matter what your Nodal placement is, the transit of the North Node in Taurus and South Node in Scorpio will influence you in one way or another, depending on the areas of your life (houses) ruled by Taurus and Scorpio.
